Confucius' Birthday

Confucius’ Birthday is celebrated on September 28 or August 27 (lunar calendar). Festivals are held to celebrate the birth of Confucius all across China. This is the date known as the Anniversary of the birth of Confucius, which is also Teacher’s Day.
On this day, many countries with Confucian culture integrated within their history would respectfully hold traditional official commemorations in the Temple each year. In particular: mainland China, Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan. Although there are still many Confucian disciples these days, the anniversary of the birth of Confucius is not a public holiday. However, it is an official public holiday for teachers in Taiwan, known as Teachers’ Day. It is not yet a statutory holiday in mainland China. In October 2006, Hong Kong officially commenced celebrating the birth date of Confucius. The roots of this traditional ceremony can be found back in the time of the Zhou Dynasty, appealing to both foreign tourists and local people.
==Festivals and activities==

To commemorate the birth of Confucius on this particular day, ceremonies are arranged all over the province of Shandong and across China. At 4am, the celebration commence in the Confucius temple and various other related temples. Among the many 10,000 and more attendees of the ceremonies at the Temple in Qufu are scholars, notable people and descendants of Confucius.

During the festival there are various activities and entertainment, which include musical performances and dancing from ancient times. This dance is the famous Yi Dance, where dancers wear clothes from the Song and Ming Dynasty, which are yellow silk robes, blue waistbands and along with black hats.
Along with this, the ceremonial music is played with various kinds of traditional Chinese instruments, this song is known as “The Sound of Peace”. This time the musicians wear the clothes of the Ming Dynasty, which are red robes and black hats while they play.
In addition to these performances, there will be calligraphy demonstrations and there will be a Confucius exhibition, some people wear the traditional costumes. Tourists are also very welcomed to attend and enter the tombs of Confucius and his descendants, explore his home town and the Confucius Temple.
